Board Member Profiles
W.E. (Wayne) Tonelli, President/Co-Founder/Chair
Wayne Tonelli, a retired Vale General Foreman, is the proud co-founder of Miners for Cancer. He started the organization with his best friend Allan Epps, then an INCO (now known as Vale) General Foreman at Frood Mine. After the unexpected passing of Epps in 2005 Wayne decided to continue to lead Miners for Cancer as a registered charitable organization in memory of his best friend. Today, Wayne continues to pride himself by promoting his charity's mission of raising funds for not only cancer equipment and patient care but to also help find a cure through fun-filled events that bring the Northeast region's mining community together. Wayne also sits on the Board for the Northern Cancer Foundation.
Amanda (Mandy) Brosseau, VP Marketing & Communications/Co-Chair
Mandy Brosseau, who joined Miners for Cancer in 2008, has an integral role with Vale as the company's Ontario Operations Corporate Affairs Specialist. As a member of the Corporate Affairs team, Mandy is responsible for supporting the company's Ontario Division internal communications, issues management, employee engagement, events planning and brand management. Since joining the group, Mandy's high energy continues to bring innovative ideas to the table like introducing the first ever Miners for Cancer Christmas Gala back in 2011.
Richard (Rick) Filion, Director Business Affairs
Rick Filion was one of the very first members of Miners for Cancer at its inception in 1996. Rick currently holds a Superintendent position at Vale's Stobie Mine where he continues to lead a very successful logistics team that is a fundamental part of the mine. Rick's business and contract management experience is an instrumental asset to Miners for Cancer's business affairs. Currently, Rick is the lead on the signature hockey challenge and also initiated the revival of the baseball challenge in 2013.
Denis DesForges, Director Inventory & Merchandising
A cancer survivor himself, Denis has been a part of the Miners for Cancer team since 2000. Denis works diligently repairing drifters (drills) for Sandvik – one of Miners for Cancer's longest running Corporate Sponsors. Denis was inspired to join the group after being forced to go to Toronto for treatment during his battle with cancer when, at the time, nothing was available to him in Sudbury. Miners for Cancer likes to call Denis its 'anchor' as he can always be counted on for his honest input and keeping the Miners for Cancer vision clear.
Joni Mascioli, Director Treasurer & Financial Affairs
Joni is the newest member on the Miners for Cancer Board of Directors joining in 2012. Given her role as a Project Controls Manager at Vale's Creighton Mine, Joni brings high quality and value added financial skills to Miners for Cancer and as such was elected to the treasury position in 2013.
Samantha Kuula, Secretary
Soon after being presented with the Allan Epps Memorial Award in January 2013 for her dedication and commitment to the community and Miners for Cancer, the Board of Directors extended an invitation to Samantha to join Miners for Cancer as an Officer of the Board. Samantha is currently the Communications Officer for SNOLAB where she is the lead innovator for coordinating scientific outreach and educational activities with science and industry partners as well as the general public. Her exceptional organization and time management skills made her an ideal candidate for the Board's Secretarial position which she accepted in August 2013.
Phillip (Phil) Perras, Board Member
After his retirement from Vale's Protection Services, Phil was seeking an opportunity to transfer his skills and enthousiasm to new places. He was soon introduced to Miners for Cancer where he graciously joined in 2010 as a Board Member. Phil's strong work ethics and dedication to the cause makes him an important asset on Miners for Cancer team.
Roberto (Rob) Ferrucci, Board Member
Rob has been a long time Miners for Cancer business sponsor through his previously owned restaurant businesses. Upon retiring from the restaurant business, Rob expressed interest in contributing more than just sponsorship to Miners for Cancer. In late 2013, Rob was welcomed as the newest member on the Board.
