Miners for Cancer prides itself on its mandate of being a primary fundraising vehicle for Northern Ontario Families affected by cancer.

Every penny received stays in the community and directly supports vital patient care, new equipment purchases and world-class cancer research at the Northeast Cancer Centre. Donors from across Northeastern Ontario can rest assured that their money is being put to work for the betterment of their region.

Miners for Cancer is an open and transparent charity - the volunteer based group is respectful of its entrusted contributions, and ensures that all funds donated are put to their intended use. Miners for Cancer proudly represents the mining community in which it fundraises and above all, the group works with enthusiasm, passion and a high degree of commitment to its cause.

Supportive Care Fund Critical Equipment Fund Cancer Research Fund

Supportive (Patient) Care Fund.

The Miners for Cancer Supportive Care Fund is available to women and men who have been diagnosed with cancer and are being treated within the Regional Cancer Program.

This fund is designed to alleviate any financial distress brought on by the diagnosis which will have a direct impact on the patient's ability to access recommended cancer care.

The Supportive Care department of the Regional Cancer Program will perform a financial assessment and will determine if the funds requested are appropriate.

Financial assistance will be provided if:

  • No other financial assistance is available through government, community, employment or private insurance.
  • The patient is in immediate financial need.
  • Without financial assistance, the patient will be unable to access recommended cancer care.
Supportive (Patient) Care Fund Program

Once Supportive Care has made their recommendation it will be reviewed a final time by the Miners for Cancer Grants Allocation Committee before a cheque is issued. With the issuance of the cheque, information will be given to the family about this Miners for Cancer initiative.

Funding for the Miners for Cancer Supportive Care Fund has been donated by Miners for Cancer through the Northern Cancer Foundation. This fund will be assessed for renewal and/or revision annually by all parties involved.

Critical Equipment Fund.

The Miners for Cancer Equipment Fund is available to any department operating within the Regional Cancer Program. This fund is designed to alleviate pressures being felt in specific departments and to allow the purchase of equipment that will enhance patient care.

The Vice President of the Regional Cancer Program will perform a financial assessment and will determine if the funds requested are appropriate.

The request will be approved if:

  • Items that are being requested are not part of the established and approved capital equipment program.
  • Items being requested will enhance the workplace environment and the patient experience.
  • Items being requested will offer enhancements to existing equipment in operation at the Regional Cancer Program.
Supportive (Patient) Care Fund Program

Once the Vice President of the Regional Cancer Program has made his or her recommendation it will be reviewed a final time by the Miners for Cancer Grants Allocation Committee before a cheque is issued. With the issuance of the cheque, information will be given to the department about the Miners for Cancer initiative.

Funding for the Miners for Cancer Equipment Fund has been donated by Miners for Cancer through the Northern Cancer Foundation. This fund will be assessed for renewal and/or revision annually by all parties involved.

Cancer Research Fund.

The Miners for Cancer Research Fund is available to full-time researchers working at the Regional Cancer Program.

The Northern Cancer Foundation Research Grant Allocation Committee will assess each request to determine if the funds requested are appropriate.

Funds will be allocated if:

  • The proposed research fits within the mandate of the overall research program.
  • The proposed research will enhance the present research occurring either in the labs or within clinic trials.
  • The proposed research will allow the researcher to use it as leverage for additional funds from other granting agencies.
Supportive (Patient) Care Fund Program

Once the Northern Cancer Research Grant Allocation Committee has made their recommendation it will be reviewed one final time by the Miners for Cancer Grants Allocation Committee before a cheque is issued. With the issuance of the cheque, information will be given to the applying researchers at the Regional Cancer Program about the Miners for Cancer initiative.
